Today we started the Second Step program which helps students succeed at school. Having respect and empathy helps kids get along with others.
Lesson 6- Listening with Attention (Nov/Dec)
Listening with attention helps students learn, work with others, and make friends.
Lesson 7- Being Assertive (Dec)
Students learn and practice identifying passive, aggressive, and assertive responses. They then learn how responding assertively helps in a variety of social and academic situations.

Students learn how to identify clues that help them recognize other people's feelings, and that recognizing other's feelings is an important part of empathy. They also learn that different people can have similar or different feelings about the same situation.

Students learn how to identify and give possible reasons for having multiple feelings in a given situation. Being able to understand how others might have multiple complex feelings is an important part of empathy.

Students practice identifying situations in which they might need to calm down. They then learn the technique for deep, centered breathing as a Way to Calm Down. They also learn other ways to calm down, including counting, taking a break, and using positive self-talk.

We are learning different rules to keep us happy, healthy, and safe. Some rules include: It doesn't matter who it is, hitting is wrong; Identify a grownup we can go to if we have a big problem; Shout, run, and tell a grownup if we are ever in danger.

Words and actions can hurt. When someone says or does something hurtful to us (or someone else), we learned that we should Stop-Walk-Talk. We also learned what to do with cyber bullying: Block-Report-Tell.
