"If every single person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary—the world really would be a better place." Quotation taken from the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio
I absolutely adore the concepts taught in the bucket filling book series by Carol McCloud and others! I find that the bucket metaphor is concrete enough for even the youngest kids to understand and that the topic applies to kids (and adults) of all ages.
Here's how it works. The book explains how every person carries around an invisible bucket which holds all of our good thoughts and feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel happy. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. All day long we are either filling up or dipping into people’s buckets with our words and actions, and others are doing the same for us.
If we do something kind or thoughtful, we fill others’ buckets. (We fill our own bucket too!) We call these people “bucket fillers.”
If we do something hurtful or rude, we empty others’ buckets. We call these people “bucket dippers.”
What will you do today to fill a bucket?
