The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum we are starting to implement district-wide. Essentially, The Zones are a way for students to identify and communicate different feelings and emotional states of being that they experience throughout the day.
There are four basic colored zones:
The Blue Zone is when your body (or brain) is moving slowly or sluggishly. (Ex: Sad, tired, sick, or bored)
The Green Zone is when your body is focused, in control, and good to go. This is the ideal zone to be in when learning something new or interacting with others. (Ex: Calm, happy, focused, or content)
The Yellow Zone is when your body is starting to lose some control. It is helpful to slow down when in this zone-- so you don't escalate into the red zone. You might even want to try using a tool to help yourself calm down. (Ex: Stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, nervousness, or confusion)
The Red Zone is when your body is out of control. If you find yourself in the red zone, stop what you are doing and take a few deep breaths. Pick a tool that will help you regain control of your body. (Ex: Elation, terror, panic, anger, rage, or explosive behavior)

***It is important to point out that there is no bad zone. (Children should not be shamed for feeling normal emotions such as sadness, frustration, or anger.) In fact, most adults fluctuate between all of the zones over the course of a day. The same is true for children.
The Zones of Regulation also teaches students to utilize different tools to help them either maintain or return to the green zone. Tools can be customized to every student, situation, environment, and/or zone.
Some common tools include:
